Tradition since 1928
Under the patronage of the agile spa director Dr. František Hohaus, even during the economic crisis at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, the tradition of automobile tournaments in the Luhačovice spa was successfully launched and maintained.
The main organizer of the competitions was the Czechoslovak Automobile Club for Moravia and Silesia (ČAMS). The first Concours d’Elegance was held in Luhačovice on the weekend of August 20 and 21, 1928, the second year on August 24 and 25, 1929, the next years in August 1930, 1931, 1932, in June 1933, in mid-August 1934 and the next years continued without interruption until August 1938. The last tournaments were held in August 1946 and 1947, but after the nationalization of the spa, this type of entertainment was no longer supported. The tournament always started on Saturday with a star race, during which the competitors arrived at the finish line in the spa. The spa square was crowded, cars were parked on both sides of the road throughout the spa area. The spa administration had stands built around the perimeter of this area for 700 spectators, and hundreds more visitors watched the tournament standing. The next day, Sunday morning, a large number of cars lined up on the spa square for the flower parade and the elegant ride. The decorated vehicles enjoyed great attention and interest from the spa guests. The parade was accompanied by concerts by the spa orchestra.
Luhacovice Spa
Luhačovice Spa has a more than 350-year spa tradition. It is the largest spa in Moravia and one of the most beautiful spas in the Czech Republic.
The unique face of Luhačovice Spa was given by the Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič. Today's Jurkovič House spa hotel is a wonderful example of his art. The atmosphere is completed by numerous hotels and villas of various architectural styles, a colonnade and a large park.
Unique natural healing mineral springs place Luhačovice among the European leaders in spa treatment of respiratory tract diseases. The elegance competition will be organized in cooperation with the joint-stock company Lázně Luhačovice, which manages the most famous mineral spring Vincentka and 9 others.
Although the foundations of the Luhačovice spa were laid in the 17th century, the spa architecture can only be discussed from the end of the 18th century, when the first group of simple spa buildings, mostly no longer preserved, was built. The most significant construction phase was the first third of the 20th century, when a unique set of buildings by architect Dušan Jurkovič was created, followed by other works of Art Nouveau, early modernism and functionalism.
The preserved types of buildings correspond to the development of the Luhačovice spa industry. In the 19th century, drinking cures for the treatment of digestion prevailed, in the 20th century the spa specialized in inhalation treatment of the upper respiratory tract. The third type of main procedures are mineral baths and hydrotherapy. On a smaller scale, other types of treatment were added to them during the 20th century: sulfur baths (joint and skin diseases), peloid procedures (peat baths), etc.
The generous, loose urbanism of a favorable scale without disruptive interventions is the result of maintaining Dušan Jurkovič's initial concept from the early 20th century throughout the entire hundred years of the spa's modern history.
