1930 Mercedes Benz 710 SS
The engine and chassis are identical numbers when delivered. The body is an original four-seat open touring car from Cadogan Motors Ltd.
Founded by SR Moss-Vernon, Cadogan began building elaborate formal bodies on large chassis. Although these bodies paid the bills, it was the company's sporting bodywork that quickly caught the eye. Their work on the Invicta, Bentley and OM chassis was light and stylish.
„"36271" is one of the few Mercedes-Benz commissions the company completed, but many consider it one of its finest works. The company held exhibitions at Olympia from 1924 to 1927, so it is quite likely that the 1927 exhibition led to the order for the "SS" model.
According to the factory specification sheet, running gear 36271 was delivered to British Mercedes Ltd in London on 22 October 1929. It was then handed over to Cordon Watney & Co on 26 February 1930.
The first owner was an English gentleman, Gilmour Smith from Glasgow, who purchased the rolling chassis in 1930. He commissioned Cadogan Motors Ltd of Fulham, London, to produce the bodywork for the sports touring car, which the car still carries today, and registered it under the number GF7429.
According to the RH Johnson register of the English Mercedes Benz Club, Gilmour Smith kept the car until 25 May 1954, when he sold it to Commander Sir Hugh Dawson in London. At that time, the touring car was grey in colour.
In 1956, the "710 SS" model was purchased by Carter Schaub of Apex, North Carolina, USA.
In 1963, the "Cadogan" was purchased through dealer Raymond Jones in Michigan, USA, by noted collector James R. Hall of New London, New Hampshire.
John Richard Warth of London brought the car to England for the well-known car dealer Charles Howard of London (Coys of Kensington) and on July 9, 1973, he re-accepted it for sale under the registration number GF7429.
In 1976, Denis Kay of Dalton, England, purchased the "SS" car at a Coys auction and in December 1983, he gave it to the highly regarded Hayashi Collection in Japan.
On 4 August 1995, Bernhard Charles Eccleston of London purchased the "Cadogan" along with two other S-Class cars and re-registered it for sale under registration number GF7429.
I finally bought the car on October 31, 2007 at the RM auction in Battersea Park, London.
We carried out a complete renovation between 2013 and 2015. The bodywork was repainted with a grey resin varnish. The original interior was carefully restored by Dr. Gundula Tutt, preserving the beautiful patina. The original dashboard was also preserved in its original condition.
